Discography : Apocalyptica : Cello Metal [320kbps-mp3-Rapidshare]

Formed in the early '90s Apocalyptica chose an entirely individual path from day one. A few years earlier, while students at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, these young virtuosos joined a cello band that specialized in playing music by everyone from Bach to Hendrix. However, Eicca Toppinen and his three comrades had something louder in mind. All fans of heavy metal, they decided to form their own band. Toppinen wrote some unique arrangements of songs by Metallica, Slayer and other metallic legends and the group embarked on a series of shows at student balls. As their services became more and more in demand, Apocalyptica took the bold step of playing a gig at a bona fide heavy metal club.

Current members of Apocalyptica
* Eicca Toppinen - Cello (1996-present)
* Paavo Lötjönen - Cello (1996-present)
* Perttu Kivilaakso - Cello (2000-present)
* Mikko Sirén - Drums (2005-present)

Apocalyptica is a Finnish cello metal band, composed of classically trained cellists and, since 2005, a drummer. Three of the cellists are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. Their music features elements from classical music, neo-classical metal, thrash metal, and symphonic metal.

* Max Lilja - Cello (1996-2002)
Sessional members
* Dave Lombardo of Slayer - Drums (2003-2004)

A Short Biography : Apocalyptica :

Formed in the early '90s the Goth-Metal band Apocalyptica chose an entirely individual path from day one. A few years earlier, while students at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, FINALND, these young virtuosos joined a cello band that specialised in playing music by everyone from J.S. Bach to Jimi Hendrix. However, Eicca Toppinen, Max Lilja, Antero Manninen and Paavo Lotjonen had something louder in mind. All fans of heavy music, they decided to form their own band, Toppinen wrote some unique arrangements of songs by Metallica, Slayer and other Metal bands and the group embarked on a series of shows at student parties.

Kari Hynninen of Zen Garden Records, who was so bowled over by the band's ingenious interpretations of metal anthems that he instantly offered them a contract and the chance to release their 1996 debut album, "Plays Metallica By Four Cellos"; it sold over one million copies worldwide.
A sophomore effort entitled "Inquisition Symphony", followed two years later, a second batch of cover versions that this time included songs by Faith No More, Pantera, Sepultura and again Metallica. It also featured the band's first original material: three songs that revealed that there was far more to Apocalyptica than novelty.
In 1999 Manninen left the band, being replaced by Perttu Kivilaakso. By the time Apocalyptica reached their third studio record, 2000's "Cult", they had decided to move away from cover versions and produced nearly a whole album's worth of fresh material that set the band's wild and compellingly diverse blend of disparate genres in stone once and for all. Apocalyptica were determined to establish themselves as a powerful creative force and "Cult" charted in the German top 40.
Now reduced to a trio, Max Lilja left the fold in 2002, with their reputation soaring, the Finnish cello-Metal troop entered the new millennium with another major step forward when they collaborated with legendary Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo on their fourth studio album, "Reflections"; it was released in February 2003 peaking at #15 in Germany.
Realising that Lombardo's rhythmic muscle had given their sound a new lease of life and enabled them to veer off in numerous new directions, Apocalyptica enlisted their own full-time drummer, Mikko Sirén, for 2005's self-titled opus. Easily the strongest album of their careers, "Apocalyptica", saw the band strengthen their song writing skills and invite some guests into the studio, including HIM frontman Ville Valo, Lauri Ylönen of The Rasmus and again Dave Lombardo; the disc debuted in both the Finnish and German charts at #5.

Apocalyptica released their latest album, "Worlds Collide", worldwide in September 2007; the 11-song set is led by the single "I'm Not Jesus", featuring Stone Sour/Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor and aslo includes collaborations with Lacuna Coil's sublime Cristina Scabbia and Three Days Grace vocalist Adam Gontier.

Apocalyptica : Worlds Collides : 2007 : Review :

Apocalyptica have delived another metal masterpiece with the Album Worlds Collide. There are several versions available including the 11 track standard, 11 track with bonus dvd (see european DVD description), the extra track japan with bonus tracks Lies, Ural, and Dreamer, and Japanese bonus track version with bonus japanese DVD with I'm not jesus, making of I'm not jesus, interview, japanese interview, live videos of Master of Puppets and Betrayal, and photo gallery. There is also the European deluxe edition with 2 bonus tracks of Ural and Dreamer, and the DVD minus the live videos and the japanese interview, and a 13 track european version with no dvd. Any version you get will be excellent. I got the European DVD version, and am very pleased.

From start to finish, this album has the tempo changes and the intensity that we have come to expect from the original compositions by this band, and also has the feature of a cover tune of the german version Heros by David Bowie sang by Rammmstein's lead singer. Also featured are tracks with Three days grace lead singer, Corey Taylor of Stonesour/Slipknot, and Christina Scabia of Lacuna Coil. These vocal tracks are all decent, but I'm still more interested in the music behind them. However, again, apocalyptica makes it work well. Plus, since the addition of drumming from the album reflections forward, Dave Lombardo of Slayer continues to guest on a few of the tracks. A nice booming addition to this already blistering line up. Tracks to play loud are "I'm not Jesus", "I Don't Care", and "Worlds Collide". Again, very good album for first timers to get, and a must for fans.
