Review : Ananda Shankar - A Musical Discovery of India | 1978 :

OK, so everyone knows that the oft-reissued Ananda Shankar & his Music has been considered legendary since the inclusion of 'Streets of Calcutta' and 'Dancing Drums' on a Blue Note break-beat compilation. But what most people don't know is that there is plenty more material of the same caliber. Later, rarer albums like the two included on this single CD yield equally impressive music with plenty of tracks waiting to be discovered by adventurous DJs! The seven tracks on A Musical Discovery of India were included on a 45 RPM 12" made for India Tourism Development Corp., released by EMI Gramophone India in 1978. 'Kaziranga Beat' is a terrific long jam highlighting the tabla, and other tracks like 'Namaskar,' 'The Hill Train,' 'Akbar's Jewels,' and 'Brindavan Revel' all have their champions. Then came Sa-Re-Ga Machan, a funky, strange, and exotic madhouse ('Jungle King' even reprises 'Streets of Calcutta') from 1981, which may be the true masterpiece among Ananda Shankar's albums. His rarest record, it is filled to the brim with hard driving funk and trippy exotica. The material ranges from dreamy swirling instrumentals with electronics and sitar, to deep exotica with organs, flutes, tablas & string sections that will devastate you with their beauty. To most people, 'India's greatest musician' means Ravi Shankar; but it was Ravi's nephew Ananda Shankar who became the voice of modern India in all its contrasting elements. In ways never previously imagined -- much less executed by other master musicians -- he alone merged Indian and Western, classical and rock traditions; he alone merged the lyrical and the funky, the exotic and the commercial, the traditional and the progressive

On these 22 tracks, recorded between the mid-1970s and the artist's death in 1999, Shankar fuses Indian ragas with a variety of Western pop/rock styles, often incorporating funk and psychedelia into the mix, as revealed on inventive, groove-laden tracks such as "Jungle Symphony" and "Charging Tiger."

Review : A Life In Music :
There is so much to write about this great sitarist/instrumentalist, but all of a sudden i can't find much to write now! Anand Shankar was probably one of the 'pionners' of what many address it as 'fusion' music! If you have good ear for the music, i can't see how you can be disappointe by this master piece!!!

Ananda Shankar: illustrious cult figure in the secret history of pop, 60s Indo-funk pioneer, sitarist who jammed with Hendrix. In 1999, he was sought out by London DJ State of Bengal, whose mixing Indian classical music with breakbeats, hip-hop and tabla rhythms perfectly complemented Ananda's distinctive sound - for this gloriously zany, beat-laden collaboration, Shankar's final studio recording.

Review : Walking On :

Ananda Shankar Experience & State Of Bengal: Ananda Shankar (sitar); Uday Kumar Dey (vocals, flute); Matt Mars (electric guitar, Moog bass); Dr. Gopal Shankar Misra (vichitra veena); Netai Lai Chakraborty (keyboards, percussion, programming); Sam Saifullah Zaman (bass, electronic drums, percussion); Keith York (drums); Mohinder Singh (tabla); Pandit Dinesh (percussion).
While the late sitarist Ananda Shankar (nephew of famed Ravi Shankar) may be best known for his cover of the Stones' classic "Jumpin' Jack Flash," Sam Zaman, member and producer of electronica outfit State of Bengal, showcases Shankar's many other achivements on the 2000's WALKING ON, which was released soon after Shanker's untimely death. Overall, this album is a testament to the ongoing marriage of traditional Eastern sounds with Western experimentation as Shankar's masterful sitar flows psychedelically through beats laid out by the contemporary Indian club mavens.
Recorded in July 1998. Includes liner notes by Alan James.CMJ (2/28/00, p.25) - "...fuses traditional Indian pop music with modern day electronica....Indo-funk grooves and traditional percussion converge with mechanized breakbeats....This pan-cultural musical event makes for one hip album."
JazzTimes (8/00, p.142) - "...[It] will surprise you...from the title tune's wicked frisson of ol' time Ganges River Delta slide sitar, hip-hop beats, and bouncing tablas...[to] surreal evocations of '70s Hollywood/Bollywood B-movies themes..."
Loathe as anyone should be to reinforce vapid cultural clichés, nothing other than shagadelic truly describes this collaboration between pop sitar player Ananda Shankar (nephew of Ravi) and Sam Zaman, the musician and producer known as State of Bengal. Walking On is a sonic journey back to a time when the sitar's sound automatically signified "psychedelic," a time when composer John Barry's sassy film themes were the ne plus ultra of bachelor-pad sophistication. Shankar (who died shortly after completing the album) plays surf sitar, rock sitar, EZ-listening sitar, and German soundtrack sitar (fans of high-speed jazz-rock sitar, however, are directed to Ashwin Batish). Although Shankar's playing sometimes sounds at odds with Zaman's techno beats, the two make a convincing case for "the '90s is the '60s upside down" argument. -Richard Gehr

Review : Sa Re-Ga Machan :
Back in stock. Highly sought after for years, 'Sa-Re-Ga Machan' was originally released in 1981 on vinyl only and showcased Shankar's unmistakable sound which fused Western and Eastern music perfectly. Shankar had a desire to incorporate both the traditional instrumentation of Indian classical music and modern Western instruments such as the synthesizer and on 'Sa-Re-Ga Machan' the two distinct sounds are infused absolutely. The album opens with possibly the most stunning piece, a ten-minute title track which sums up the musician's intent perfectly, sounding like a cross between the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Ry Coder and Ravi Shankar, Ananda's famous uncle. What shocks me most however is how contemporary so much of this sounds, you can imagine it popping up on television or on films, it just has the right 'sound', and like so many forgotten records from the same era it's a breaks goldmine. Just listen to 'Charging Tiger' and think what Madlib might do with it? It doesn't even bear thinking about. Also included here as bonus tracks accompanying the original album are the four tracks from Shankar's rarest release 'India Remembers Elvis', which sees the Sitar player take on the King himself. Boogie wonderland...

Along with the fantastic up-tempo numbers, we also get treated to a few lovely tracks that are more on the chilled side. it was originally issued in India and has become one of the world's most sought-after records!

Streets Of Calcutta - mp3 - Ananda Shankar

Review : Ananda Shankar and His Music 1975 :
Incredible Indian record !!! including 2 killer dancfloor psyché cuts " streets of calcutta " & " dancing drums " hightly recommended for rare grooves dj's. Ananda Shankar became well know in the 90's when Capitol records picked "Streets of Calcutta" and "Dancing Drums" for their Blue Note famous break beat compilation. More stuff with same caliber instrumentations on this album. Perhaps the best !
This 1975 album is a stunner -- way more open-minded than his other album for Reprise (which we've also got on reissue!), with tracks that push the funky groove a lot farther than you'd expect, swirling percussion, organ, guitar, tablas, moog, and sitar all together into an unbelievable sound that will leave you breathless!

Description :
The legendary 1970 Reprise record from Ananda Shankar, one of the first recordings to fuse Eastern and Western musical forms! Shankar came by his artistic innovation honestly; both his parents were renowned dancers and his uncle was Ravi Shankar, and here he explores the connection between Indian and psychedelic music with the use of sitar, tabla and moog, not to mention covers of the Stones’ Jumpin’ Jack Flash and the Doors’ Light My Fire!
Wielding a psychedelic axe of a different order, master sitarist Ananda Shankar (Ravi's nephew) offers up two groovy covers of rock classics, "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire." Actually, this classic of exotica, which originally appeared in 1970 on Reprise, isn't as cheesy as it might seem at first sight. All the originals are straightforward and melodic, solidly produced and seriously played, and in the case of "Snow Flower," an unsung instrumental pop classic. Shankar also gets to strut his stuff on the 13-minute plus "Sagar (The Ocean)," which turns into a syncopated East-West stomp after a leisurely "alap" intro.

Review : Ananda Shankar :
If you have ever thought that western and Indian music would sound fantastic together, this is the album to listen to. Ananda Shankar blends sitar, guitar, bass, electronics seamlessly in these tunes from the beat generation and from his homeland. A smooth sitar replaces the voice, while western instruments provide backings to rival the best beats and sounds of the time. Ananda's musical heritage (he is Ravi Shankar's nephew) is evident in the snappy arrangements and the many exotic sounds. Moving off planet Earth recently, let's hope he's in the best gig in the sky. Although there are a few imitators, this is the one you'll think of as how fusion should be written.
This is a really cool funky and naturally transcendental album. the sitar playing is beautiful and even very fast and complex at times funkying it up throughout the whole album, Ananda Shankar is a unique master of this instrument playing with immense feeling and originality. the rest of the musicians are really sick too, the drums and bass are really tight. it seems they were all immensely feeling these songs during recording. very creative album, and i love the last track when the Indian singing choir comes on for the ride to make an epic ending to close the album with. sick electric indian funk!

Description / Details:

Classical singing is getting a makeover. It is now being repackaged for the lounge crowd, by fusing it with international music popular with the younger generation.
Classical keyboard player Abhijit Pohankar had started this project with the album Piya Bavari some six years ago. That album claimed to be the first Indian-raga-based track embraced by the West in an international lounge compilation called Chillout in Paris Vol.3 by Buddha Bar. It was so popular that the second album has retained the same name with "Again" added to it.
This offering tends to be even better than the original thanks to the enchanting voice of the father of Abhijit, well-known classical vocalist Pandit Ajay Pohankar.
The album opens with the evergreen Aye Na Balam Ka Karoon Sajni. Most people remember it in the voice of Yesudas from the film Swami, but actually it has been immortalised by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Here, the senior Pohankar sings it in the style of the Ustad. It has been embellished with alaaps and contemporary soundscaping.
The album gets its name from a thumri, Piya bawari, remixed by DJ Suketu and with vocals by Ajay Pohankar. Another stylish thumri is Payaliya jhankaar.
Perhaps the most enjoyable of the lot is Ab to aao sajna, with some excellent khayaal alaap, although the voices in the background saying "yeah" and "oh" mar the impact somewhat.
The male version of Jo hamne is also polished. Its female version has been rendered by Vaijanti Limaye, Runa Rizvi— daughter of ghazal maestro Raj Kumar Rizvi—and Lalitya Munshaw.

Piya Bavari : Tracklist :

This music CD features 11 melodious geets.
This music CD has following tracks:

Piya Bavari
Kin Bairan (Traditional)
Rang De (Traditional)
Taraana (Male)
Tum San Naina
Bechain Hui
Sajan More
Albeli Naar Pyari
Taraana (Female)
Kaise Kate

CD Bonus Track
Jiya Mane Nahi.

Description / Details :

Piya Bavari is a pioneer of light classical fusion as far as hindustani classical music goes. Abhijit Pohankar, a classical keyboard player, is the composer of this 2002 album released by Times Music. Pt. Ajay Pohankar and Arati Ankalikar provide the male and female vocals respectively.

The album has a total of 11 tracks (only 10 if you go for the cassette instead of the cd). It begins with the title track - Piya Bavari - which is an excellent composition. Other good tracks include Tum San Naina, Bechain Hui (look out for great work by flautist Ashvin), Albeli Naar Pyari, Kaise Kate, and my personal favourite - Jiya Mane Nahi. Of the two taraanas (male and female), I prefer the Arati Ankalikar version to the one by Pt. Ajay Pohankar.

The only problem (a small one) with the album is that sometimes the music tends to overpower the vocals. I can’t put my finger on any particular song. But that is how I feel. That apart, this is a very good album if you like hindustani classical music or any kind of fusion.
