Apocalyptica : Worlds Collides : 2007 : Review :

Apocalyptica have delived another metal masterpiece with the Album Worlds Collide. There are several versions available including the 11 track standard, 11 track with bonus dvd (see european DVD description), the extra track japan with bonus tracks Lies, Ural, and Dreamer, and Japanese bonus track version with bonus japanese DVD with I'm not jesus, making of I'm not jesus, interview, japanese interview, live videos of Master of Puppets and Betrayal, and photo gallery. There is also the European deluxe edition with 2 bonus tracks of Ural and Dreamer, and the DVD minus the live videos and the japanese interview, and a 13 track european version with no dvd. Any version you get will be excellent. I got the European DVD version, and am very pleased.

From start to finish, this album has the tempo changes and the intensity that we have come to expect from the original compositions by this band, and also has the feature of a cover tune of the german version Heros by David Bowie sang by Rammmstein's lead singer. Also featured are tracks with Three days grace lead singer, Corey Taylor of Stonesour/Slipknot, and Christina Scabia of Lacuna Coil. These vocal tracks are all decent, but I'm still more interested in the music behind them. However, again, apocalyptica makes it work well. Plus, since the addition of drumming from the album reflections forward, Dave Lombardo of Slayer continues to guest on a few of the tracks. A nice booming addition to this already blistering line up. Tracks to play loud are "I'm not Jesus", "I Don't Care", and "Worlds Collide". Again, very good album for first timers to get, and a must for fans.

Apocalyptica : Apocalyptica : 2005 : Review :

Once again Apocalyptica proved to be influencial and staggering with their new album. For those of you who are not familiar with Apocalyptica and their music, I recommend you to listen to their former albums in order to appreciate and fully understand the groups's progress. For a quick info you can listen to tracks such as "Master of Puppets", "M.B.", "Inquisition Sypmhony", "Path", "Toreador" and "Prologue[Apprehension]".

Well, from the day they started off with "Plays Metallica by Four Cellos" Apocalyptica have immensely matured and diversified their sound span. Today, their new self-titled album "Apocalyptica" stands at the peak of their maturing. Diversity blended with drums continue to flourish throughout this album. Tracks such as "Fisheye", "Fatal Error" and ofcourse "Betrayal/Forgiveness", which is featuring Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, are the most aggressive and thrilling tracks on the album. While listening to "Fisheye" or "Betrayal/Forgiveness" you can find yourself accompanying the drums and totally blown out. By the way should I mention the unbelievable cello playing skills that will give you shivers?

On the other hand tracks like "Farewell", "Ruska" and "Deathzone" are more classical tuned and evenly beatiful like the rest of the album. I should recommend "Farewell" to everybody, this song conveys all feelings so poised and brilliantly that it can make you cry easily at the end of a though day.

Remaining tracks; "Life Burns!", "Quutamo", "Distraction", "Bittersweet", "Misconstruction" are all moving and should appeal to everyone who likes metal or classical music.

Eventually in this album Apocalyptica took one step forward in terms of sound and recording quality. Fact that they took charge in recording of the album shows us that they are also talented in production as well. This album, standing as the darkest but the most moving Apocalyptica ever made, is a must listen and should thrill everyone who wants to savor quality, adept music.

Apocalyptica Reflections Revised 2003

Apocalyptica : Reflections : Review :

The idea of a Metal band having a cellist is odd enough but when you add two more you are left with the wondrous creation that is the group Apocalyptica. This band clearly have taken traditional barriers and shattered the accepted with something completely out of left field. Mixing classical instruments with heavy music is not something that has never been done before (see the Metallica S&M as well as KISS Symphony releases for examples of that). Now while those were appealing in their own unique ways, the Apocalyptica music is new creations entirely. As I listened to this skillful blending of classical instrumentation along with rock solid riffing I was wondering if I was listening to Metal at all. Instead I wondered if perhaps a new breed of Progressive Music was upon us. At fear I would leave something out, I decided to settle on this being a little bit of both. In any case it is a welcome addition to the fold. With Progressive music there are often many classical inferences, what better way to showcase them than with actually classically trained musicians who also are lovers of Metal and things heavy.

The three main figures in Apocalyptica are Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Perttu Kivilaakso who all are very adept at the cello and as you listen you find yourself quickly swept up into a unique array of musical colors as you listen to the piece. In addition to the studio musicians who encompass the rest of the recorded piece, Dave Lombardo (most noted for his work in Slayer) appears on a number of tracks as drummer and percussionist.

I enjoyed most of this CD, and had so many interesting takes as Listened. The song "Faraway" had an almost movie soundtrack feel to it. It was a warm and sincere piece, while "Prologue Apprehension" which starts the CD kicks you into a decent gear. In "Somewhere Around Nothing" there are some technical chops that one only generally would find in stuff like Dream Theater or Yes. It is a recommended piece for those who choose to experiment a little more often than others, or for those seeking a different level of musical satisfaction. There are 18 tracks on the CD, a large number of bonus tracks and a video. It is certainly a good amount of value for the money. Of all the tracks, there is two vocal songs, and one is sung by Nina Hagen.

Apocalyptica : 2000 : Cult : Review :

Cult is Apocalyptica's third album, released in 2000 with a special-edition released in 2001 containing an extra disc. This album also saw a small trend starting in their single releases, as both "Hope" and "Path" have second versions called "Path Vol. 2" and "Hope Vol. 2" with lyrics sung by Sandra Nasic and Matthias Sayer, respectively. Here, Apocalyptica also started using distortion effects much more boldly and frequently. There are some versions of the first release with "Path Vol. 2" as the first track and "Path" as the fourteenth. This is the last Apocalyptica album to feature Max Lilja on cello.

Apocalyptica : 1998 : Inquisition Symphony : Review :

What happens when you take four classically trained cellists who have a love for heavy metal? You get the group Apocalyptica. This group crosses the metal sounds of Metallica, Faith No More, Sepultura, and Pantera with the classical sounds of strings. I've always believed strings would make a good addition to a heavy metal group, and Apocalyptica did just that running their four cellos through distortion. The amazing thing about "Inquisition Symphony" is that there are no other instruments. The full, heavy and thundering sound is just four cellos. The ability to take true head-banger music and play it on the cello without losing any intensity is truly incredible. Eicca Toppinen, Antero Mannienen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Max Lilja are great musicians.

There is a great sampling of heavy metal on this album that is more than just a tribute to the heavy metal bands. The classic Metallica "Fade to Black" is so well played. The haunting melody carried on the undistorted strings of a single cello before the others join in bringing the weight of the song. This proves that Metallica does belong in a symphony hall. Another good example is "One". The song almost sounds like a classical piece until the crescendo of distorted strings mimic the staccato bursts of lyrics. But this album is just more than covers as Toppinen takes his hand at penning three songs here. There opening track, "Harmageddon" shows that Toppinen can head-band with the best of `em. Opening with an airy beginning, he turns up the volume with a heavy rhythm and a clean melody playing over it. The two make a startling counterpoint. Later, "M.B." is another heavy song, which slows down in the middle for a slow, haunting movement as it slowly picks up speed back to heavy metal land. Add in the great "Toreador" and you would be hard pressed to realize that any of these songs were not written by a great heavy metal band.

This is always a great album, half classical and half heavy metal. I love to introduce it to people, and everyone who hears it finds they love it enough to buy. The idea is unique and may have started the orchestral arrangements for other groups, like Pink Floyd's "Us and Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd". If you like heavy metal and classical, this album is a must have.
