On Rising From the East, the New Delhi-born Bally Sagoo continues (and polishes up) his combination of house music with the traditional sounds of the Asian subcontinent and the Mid-East; the fact that elements of the record were recorded in Saudi Arabia, France, India, and Pakistan demonstrates some of this breadth. The appeal of Sagoo's work comes in the form of a high degree of compositional attention -- rather than simply dropping house beats under the voices of playback singers in the danceable Indian manner some other DJs have adopted, Sagoo paces his tracks carefully, incorporating both elements in a tasteful style that never really seems gimmicky. Of course, Sagoo's traditionally club-oriented house moves lack the innovation of the deconstructive breakbeats and jungle aesthetics other DJs have laid into ragga, bhangra, and traditional Indian and Pakistani music -- his aim is at a mainstream pop market, and this might leave more experimentally minded listeners a bit cold.

Bally Sagoo is huge in Europe and India. Conservative estimates on sales of his first record were around 1,500,000 worldwide. Bally is the father of the `Bhangra Beat', born in New Dehli and raised in London, Mr. Sagoo has had a huge range of influences from traditional Indian music to American R&B. This record is way different than what you are used to. You will never hear one of these cuts on your top 40 radio station however the music is pop oriented. It has a female vocal, Indian instrumentation, modern effects like samples and a hip hop groove. It is a very interesting listen with the exception of wen the singer goes over the top with the Indian chanting on a cut or two. That is easy to ignore considering the strengths of the record. Bally Sagoo fits in well with your Massive Attack and Tipsy as a non-mainstream record that you may just find irresistible.

The New Delhi-born Bally Sagoo grew up in Britain where he established a reputation as one of the more happening purveyors of dance music. His music incorporates all manner of bhangra, hip-hop and ragga. His old Indian film-music background has also influenced his art, made tangible around the time of 1995's Bollywood Flashback but also in an underlying sense since film music has created a series of conventions for presenting itself. The kitchen-sink approach so beloved of non-Indian commentators was a tradition that Bally Sagoo could take to heart. Bally Sagoo and Devissaro contributed the music to new dance works by Daksha Sheth and Roger Sinha performed by Yuva (a young South Asian dance company) under the collective title of Tongues Untied in September as part of the annual Vivarta Festival in London. In 1994 it was announced that he had signed a major deal with Columbia/Sony. It was evidence of his versatility and their belief in his potential. Rising from the East followed in 1996, and Sountracks: For Your Life was released in 1999.
