It is not just a 'solo' release but - in accordance with his musical philosophy - unites again many eminent musical masters from India and Europe to create an energetic, yet intimate world music album full of depth, feelings and nuances. With this album Joshua focuses again more on the natural and acoustic sound scapes of the sitar, the bamboo flute and Indian vocals. Review : Prem Joshua - Ahir | with Chintan | 2006 :Ahir is a co-production of Prem Joshua with his longtime musical partner, loop-master, keyboardist, percussionist and composer Chintan Relenberg. With their concerts they have been touring the world together for the last 10 years and finally, 'Ahir' is their first album release under both their names.
On this album the team collaborates with outstanding Indian master musicians, such as South Indian violinist Kumaresh from Bangalore, senior classical vocalist Mrs Sumita Guha from Delhi, and percussionist Raul Sengupta from Calcutta. Joshua and Chintan succeed in uniting the essence of Indian classical raga with infectious modern grooves in a firework of rhythms and melodies.

Purists may scoff at Prem Joshua's combination of classical Indian music and funky European electronica, but that's why purists tend not to be much fun to hang around with. Prem Joshua, on the other hand, is probably lots of fun to hang around with, at least if his albums are any indication. Ahir finds him collaborating with keyboardist and bassist Chintan to create a complex but approachable, gentle yet robustly danceable set of East-West fusion compositions. Equally adept on sitar and bamboo flute, Prem Joshua takes the scale patterns of raga and sets them in a variety of dance-based rhythmic formats -- from the thumping house setting of "Namaskar" to the strutting old-school funk sound of "Ramana" to the dubwise one-drop reggae of "Sharanay" and the downtempo simmer of "The Subject Tonight Is Love." Best of all is "Mysore Monsoon," a track that juxtaposes the sweet moan of the flute with the vinegary squawk of the clavinet, while a synthesizer emits a soft boing at the end of every line and melismatic vocals twine themselves around a propulsive club beat. Like all of Prem Joshua's projects, this one offers a lovely balance between euphoria and contemplation, and puts it all to a booty-moving beat. Highly recommended.

This is exquisite music for both the opening of the summer months and the growth of the soul. YATRI, Prem Joshua's latest release from was recorded in the summer moons of 2004 during his travels in Europe and America. The music's heart though is India and the silent beauty of realised meditation. Even as the musicians dig deep to explore funk and jazz music through the album's world fusion format, YATRI is always a journey within. Twenty years of Prem Joshua's travel in India, his time studying with the great teacher Osho and his mastery as a triple instrumentalist of flute, sitar and soprano saxophone are all elements of YATRI's great substance. "Mystics of Sound", also known as "Yatri", is the new album out by World musician Prem Joshua. The first time I heard Prem Joshua in Los Angeles something changed in me. His music is the music you always want playing no matter where you are. Prem Joshua always blends his love for the East and his love for the West together in perfect harmony and does equally if not more so on this album. He told me that this album was developed on tour while in India and Europe and then finally came together in the studios in Europe. Rather then adhering to any rules, he and his band gave their best to each song and allowed the organic nature of each song to unfold and to ripen. To describe Prem Joshua's music by a specific musical term is not easy as there are so many different facets to his sound. Call it World Fusion, East-West-Fusion, India Lounge, Indo-Ambient - all these names just give a vague idea of his actual music. But one rare definition applies to all of his CDs: it is "Music for Listening". What a luxury in a time when most music has become a mere consumer's item and lost all sacredness! Joshua's music can accompany you through your daily affairs - but you might suddenly discover that you stop doing other things and start listening again for the sheer joy of listening - or even dance in your room. Who still provides music for that? And to me his music has yet another quality: timelessness. Even when listening to his older albums there is always a certain freshness to them. Working as a World Music Radio DJ I have been a fan of Joshua's music for many years. I enjoyed his more acoustic and "classical" albums as much as his danceable liaisons with Trance, Ambient and Lounge. His new album "Yatri" features again more his acoustic side, the flavour of Indian instruments and Indian raga music. Rich melodies on sitar, flute and vocals fly over a background of smooth and groovy arrangements. Joshua's sitar playing has ripened and matured even further. Outstanding on this album are also Joshua's choir arrangements and the solos by Indian singer Sandhya Sanjana. Known from Joshua's album "Shiva Moon" she is again featured here with her deep and rich voice. "Yatri" means traveller and is a tribute to India by a Westerner who got deeply involved with India's musical tradition - but translates India's musical essence in a very contemporary and cosmopolitan way.

Prem Joshua & Manish Vyas, both extraordinary multi- instrumentalists, composers and musical partners for 15 years - have been recording and giving concerts together all over the world. This is their feature album under both their names - an inspired collection of compositions played with high craftsmanship - melting the traditional musical boundaries of East and West.
When Prem Joshua and Manish Vyas first met in India in 1987, they immediately realized that they shared the same musical vision: a vision of a sound both energetic and meditative - a vision rooted in the musical traditions of both the East and the West. A lot of water has gone down the Ganges since that first meeting! Again and again Joshua and Manish have shared their similar tastes through projects involving other musicians as well - different solo projects, albums, and bands. When the full moon shines over mighty Ganga on a clear night - it is like time has come to a halt. It seems like a thousand stars shine in the quiet waters and musicians and dancers perform special songs and dances dedicated to the full moon. It is reported that on such an occasion a great raja was listening to the music of his court musicians and dancers, totally emersed and captivated by their play and the beauty of the night. At this moment he was interrupted by a courier announcing that an enemy king with his army had approached the walls of the city to take over the kingdom. The raja told his courier to inform the foreign king that he can have the kingdom, they could settle such mondane things the next morning. The foreign king was even invited to join the magical and peaceful night of music and silence. The legend continues that the foreign king, originally being prepared for war, was so puzzled by the raja´s answer that he couldn´t resist his curiosity. He followed the invitation and quietly joined the concert. When he saw the raja and his court meditating to the celestial music he was so moved and humbled by the beauty of the scene that he apologized to the raja and withdrew with his army.

Joshua says this about this album: "As the title suggests - it's again a more rhythmical, energetic album, and I had maximum fun doing this one.
There are many soulful melodies on Indian instruments like bamboo flute, sitar, dilruba and santoor, flying over strong ethnic and modern grooves, hiphop, drum 'n' bass and trancey rhythms and sounds - all interwoven with Manish's 'pumping' tablas. But there is one more thing. I got totally into singing! As wise English lyrics about love and life don't come easily to me and 'lalala' felt a bit boring, I got into my own very contemporary version of Indian 'Tarana' singing and also chose some beautiful mantras.
This album went through many different stages. First I did initial recordings in India, then I took the pieces on tour to play them live. Afterwards I recorded them in my private studio in Tuscany, Italy, and finally taking them to studios in Holland and Denmark.
The main musicians I'm playing with are Manish Vyas, multi-instrumentalist from India; Maneesh de Moor, keyboardist from Amsterdam; and Rishi, drummer, producer and genius from Copenhagen. Of course there are also other musicians who left their juicy statements on the album, like Chintan and Dinesh from 'Hamsafar' and great talents from the Indian and Danish music scene.

Shakti, Shiva' s partner is a very lively and powerful goddess, and Prem Joshua, with his latest release, DANCE OF SHAKTI, has captured this flavor in the CD. Full of harmony - round, melodious and at times soft and feminine - the music is always full of juice and passion! Joshua has successfully combined old mantras and interwoven them with the Indian sounds of sitar and the melodies of the bamboo flute. And this music soon gets you going with the drive of the drum 'n' bass, electronic sounds, and electric guitars.
This album is the meeting of the at-ease-ness of the East with the bubbling liveliness of the West. Joshua who lived in India for many years has learned a lot from his Indian musical masters. Now he brings back to the West his rich experience with Indian classical music. Here he lets Shakti ride the tiger of fast beats. No dreamy Indian sounds here, but fresh and fast combinations that shake you awake, and get you ready to take off on any dance floor or disco. Many of the tracks on DANCE OF SHAKTI invite ecstatic dancing and celebration.
Pieces like "Himalaya Trance" or "Nanak" are a real treat lasting longer than 10 minutes positively inviting you to surrender with the trance of the mantras. Prem Joshua goes far beyond the old musical structures of the Occident and Orient. This could easily become the next trend in clubs and discos from London to Madrid and New York to Paris. As far as I know - this is already happening in Delhi and Bombay!
